Berle cited Ecco Bella as an ''Environmentally Attuned Mail Order Company'', that produced a 30 page catalogue of products made from all-natural
botanical ingredients (Berle, 1991, p.95)[1]. ''She thought to herself, "Why not put together a list of manufacturers who didn''t test on animals and list them in a catalog that would appeal to people who didn''t want to support companies that engaged in animal cruelty?" She called her catalog and company Ecco Bella (...). For the first catalog, she hired three people to help fill the orders. The orders picked up, and she began developing her own line of environment friendly household goods that were formulated and packaged with the environment in mind'' (Bennett, 1991, p.214)[2].
Sally Malanga started Ecco Bella in 1992, from her townhouse in North Caldwell, New Jersey, using her garage as the warehouse. Malanga found that many of the ingredients in commercial body care products included talc, mercury, synthetic colours and fragrances, formaldehyde releasing preservatives, and a wide range of ingredients derived from petroleum. In addition Malanga was also horrified at the extent and cruelty of animal testing carried out by major cosmetic companies. Malanga went on to found Ecco Bella on two guiding principles; testing products on people, and only using gentle natural ingredients that had been proved to be safe over time[3]. Since 1992, Ecco Bella has pioneered a range of beauty products that are 50-70% organic, and free of water, gluten, dyes and preservatives. Ecco Bella also credits itself with expanding the natural beauty field through its support of ethical farming[4].
Status 2010:
The current Ecco Bella product range includes Skin Care and Body Lotions, Natural Hair Care products, Make Up, Natural Fragrances and Natural Air
Fresheners. In 2004 Ecco Bella also expanded their range to include a chocolate bar called the Wonder Bar which was specially formulated to help women alleviate the symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)[5]. Sally Malanga remains the president of Ecco Bella, which currently has estimated annual sales of $1,800,000[6]. The company operates from offices in Montclair, New Jersey, and sends Ecco Bella products to consumers around the world [7].
